SHHS Make-A-Wish Week

r Salem Hills High School’s Make-A-Wish week is in full swing with dress-up days and events for students and community members.

Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will benefit Olivia Leach a student at Oakridge School in Springville. The 17-year-old has Baraitser-Winter syndrome, a rare medical condition identified in only 50 individuals worldwide. Her wish is to go to Walt Disney World.

On Thursday, November 16, the Manhawk is sure to be a crowd pleaser. Teams of boys and their girl coaches have prepared dances to perform for Olivia. “It’s a silly, rowdy, fun night,” said Salem Hills Assistant Principal Liz Reynolds.

Cost for the Manhawk is $3 per person. The event will be held at 7 p.m. in the school auditorium. The doors open at 6:30.

Reynolds called the next event, The Great Skyhawk Gorge, “Costco sample day on steroids.” She said there will be numerous booths with food samples and activities to participate in from local community members. School groups like the guitar club and dance team will be providing entertainment.

The Great Skyhawk Gorge will be on Monday, November 20, from 5 -7 p.m. in both school gyms. The cost is $5 for an individual or $20 for an immediate family pass.

Reynolds said she loves this event because of the way it brings the community together. Many of the booths come from businesses or people who don’t have students at the school. “There is so much community involvement and so many generous donations,’ she said. “It’s a lot of fun and it’s been awesome to see.”

This year, the 10th Make-A-Wish week, there will be a Salem Hills Alumni booth at the Gorge.

Reynolds said the school has raised over around $2,600 with Make-A-Wish Week so far. If they raise over $10,000, Salem Hills Principal Bart Peery will shave his head. “There’s a lot of people who want to see him bald,” she said.

The Manhawk and the Great Skyhawk Gorge are the program’s biggest money makers.
