County, Provo agree on ice arena funding
r The Utah County Board of Commissioners announced on June 21 that an agreement was reached with Provo City, during the quarterly board meeting of the Provo City/Utah County Ice Sheet Authority, to fully fund Peaks Ice Arena through the 2018 fiscal year.
Management at the arena has been working hard to lower the operational subsidy that has been funded by both the county and the city. According to Utah County Commission Chair Bill Lee, “the subsidy has been decreased in agreement with Provo City.”
Earlier this year the commission sent a letter to Provo City requesting a review of the agreement with the intent to look at options to make the arena more self-sufficient and to invite other interested parties to consider taking over the county’s share of the facility.
The Peaks Ice Arena was a joint venture of Provo City and Utah County, built in support of the 2002 Winter Olympics.
